Arrival at Six Senses Zighy Bay

After a week attending ATM in the bustling metropolis of Dubai, Commercial Director Iva Acrabova and I took the opportunity to visit Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman’s northern Musandam Peninsula. The drive from Dubai takes about two hours and crosses through a dry valley, or “wadi,” flanked by large barren mountains of bedrock, creating a dramatic backdrop for the journey. The border crossing was quick and straightforward, with several consecutive high-security checkpoints — and we were the only vehicle there.

On advice from the resort, we made sure to get our passports stamped on arrival in Dubai to avoid confusion at the Omani border. Once through, we passed the Musandam Dam along another wadi filled with goats nibbling on sparse trees until we reached the Six Senses arrival gate. From here, it was a steep drive winding up the side of a mountain before cresting the top and passing by “Senses on the Edge” restaurant — where the true arrival experience begins, if you have the stomach for it! From this elevated position (960 feet), you’re greeted with stunning views of Zighy Bay — a green oasis with a long sandy beach and the clear emerald waters of the Gulf of Oman, hemmed in by craggy mountains.

Paragliding Adventure! A Thrilling Way to Arrive in Style

There are two ways to get down to Six Senses Zighy Bay: either continue by vehicle, winding down the other side of the mountain, or leap off from “Senses on the Edge” and paraglide to the resort. Being the thrill-seekers that we are, Iva and I chose the latter and took a leap of faith!

When we discovered that the paragliding instructor was Bulgarian, Iva went first with an extra spring in her step, and I watched her glide down to Zighy Bay like a bird of prey. Standing at the precipice waiting for my turn gave me more time to think about jumping than I would have liked, so when it finally came time to run off the edge, I was a little nervous, to say the least. Fortunately, as soon as the thermals caught us and hoisted us high above the craggy rocks, the initial rush of adrenaline gave way to a sense of calm as we gently floated down with amazing views in every direction.

About halfway down, we found a pocket of air that lifted us higher — an exhilarating feeling. After an arrival experience that was both exciting and serene, we landed softly on the sand by “Shua Shack” and the saltwater pool. My two overriding feelings upon landing safely were gratitude that I was still alive — and a desire to go again immediately. But alas, there were more pressing matters, like checking in.

Resort Overview

Traditional Omani Village Meets Luxury Resort

From the main Sablah reception area, the resort feels like a traditional Omani village. The structures are made from local materials such as mountain stone and timber, with its own souq, cylindrical towers (one housing a wine cellar), an open-air marketplace, and winding sandy walkways — you could be on the set of an Indiana Jones movie.

Pool Villas & Beachfront Accommodation

We stayed in a Pool Villa Beachfront, looking directly out over the bay of Oman. The entry-level rooms, called Pool Villas, are identical but set one or two rows further back. If you want direct beach access, choose the Beachfront category.

I loved my villa — it had an authentic, homely feel and, in the intense midday heat, provided a cool and shady retreat with high ceilings, thick stone walls, and a colourfully cushioned living area. The villas are very private, surrounded by high walls, with a large infinity pool and shaded sun lounge area. For guests seeking even more privacy, there are straw gates that can be closed off from the beach.

Swimming, Snorkeling, and Beach Experience

The bay is perfect for swimming, and there’s even a snorkelling point with excellent visibility. I should mention that there’s a discreet barrier separating the swimming area from the open ocean, protecting the beach from occasional tar that can wash in from the Gulf of Oman. Although it’s a fair distance away, it’s a busy shipping lane — and tar is an unfortunate byproduct. Nevertheless, guests can rest assured the barrier does its job, allowing for peaceful swims and strolls along the beach.

Seasonality in Oman

Best Time to Visit Zighy Bay & Activities by Season

From April to October, it gets very hot in Oman — considered the low season. If you like early mornings and operating before the sun is in full force, this is a great time to visit and enjoy good rates, with water-based activities still very doable.

We visited as the low season was beginning, and although it was extremely hot, it was still manageable. The high season at Zighy runs from November to March, when temperatures are cooler and more suitable for demanding outdoor activities.

You can choose from many experiences — paragliding, microlight flights, or early morning hikes. I opted for a hike to discover a lost village and the secluded Smuggler’s Bay, a perfect picnic spot tucked away in the next cove. On the ascent, we passed Zighy Marina, where a traditional dhow takes guests along the coast to visit local villages, caves, beaches, and dive sites.

The hike was beautiful — as the sun rose, the colours of the hills shifted through deep reds, oranges, and purples while mist rose from the water to meet us. Apart from a few goats nimbly climbing trees, we didn’t see another human being. Only the remains of an old fishing community — limestone brick houses and gravestones high on the hill — lent the walk an atmospheric edge.

Exploring the Property

Morning Walks & Spa Experience

After a wonderful morning walk and an excellent breakfast at the marketplace, it was time to relax at the spa, the only part of my Six Senses Zighy Bay experience that felt a little underwhelming. The spa was too dark for my taste and somewhat unimaginative compared to the rest of the resort, though it’s due for a revamp, which I’m sure will give it a new lease of life.

The treatment itself was excellent, with two Arabic-style hammams, an ice cave, and a menu of skin-purifying and soul-soothing treatments. There’s plenty to choose from, it’s just the setting that could use an upgrade.

Dining & Atmosphere at Six Senses Zighy Bay

I’m a big fan of Six Senses properties, and one of the things I love about them is how they capture atmosphere and energy across the resort, Zighy Bay is no exception.

Meal times are particularly special: breakfast at the Spice Market (with perfectly cooked poached eggs), lunch à la carte at the Summer House overlooking the pool, or dinner on the beach during Market Night, lit by handmade standing lamps scattered between tables. I was struck by the mix of guests; honeymooners, multigenerational families, and older couples all enjoying themselves and sampling the delicious Asian street food on offer.

Shua Shack: Candlelit Omani Feast Under the Stars

One evening, we were treated to a candlelit dinner under the stars at “Shua Shack,” where we enjoyed a traditional Omani feast featuring shuwa - lamb marinated in spices and slow-cooked in an underground oven. The meat was so tender it fell off the bone. Accompanied by rice dishes and hot and cold mezze, there was so much food that we were well and truly defeated.

Sunset Drinks at Senses on the Edge

On our last night, we returned to “Senses on the Edge” for sunset drinks and canapés, reflecting on a few wonderful days in a truly special location. Zighy Bay is a beautifully run resort, and I must save my final comments to compliment the staff, kind, attentive, and always smiling.

Whether it was the waitstaff finding us a perfect table on the beach, my hiking guide sharing stories of the lost village, or our villa butler creating a video for us to use on social media, the service felt personal, natural, and unforced.

Final Thoughts

Why Zighy Bay is a Must-Visit

I would love to return to Zighy Bay one day with my family. I spotted a kids’ club and pool that I know my daughter would love. The quality of the accommodation, food, service, and the uniqueness of the location, within easy reach of Dubai, makes it a very attractive option. It pairs perfectly with a trip to the Maldives, offering something completely different yet equally high-end.

We’re delighted to have Zighy Bay as part of our HUM Beyond program and will continue to recommend it wholeheartedly.
