History

Bermuda was first settled in 1609 by survivors of the English ship Sea Venture, who were shipwrecked on the island while en route to Virginia. Officially claimed as a British territory in 1612, Bermuda has remained under British sovereignty ever since. Throughout its history, Bermuda’s strategic Atlantic location made it an important naval base and maritime hub. Today, its rich colonial heritage is reflected in its well-preserved historic towns, forts, and cultural traditions, which blend British influence with island character.
