Sri Lanka's Rich History
Evidence suggests that Sri Lanka was inhabited as early as 125,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found the remains of humans in several Sri Lankan caves, proving settlement on the island in human pre-history. The island’s early inhabitants are considered ancestors of the Vedda people. Between 500 and 1000 BC, Sri Lanka was culturally unified with southern India. By 1517, the Portuguese had arrived, eventually taking control of the island. Then, following a war between the Portuguese and Dutch, the Dutch claimed Sri Lanka. In 1815, after much conflict with the British, Sri Lanka surrendered itself to the British Empire before proclaiming independence in 1948.
Sri Lanka's Diverse Geography
The main island of Sri Lanka, made of metamorphic rock and limestone, has an area of 65,268 km2. Offshore islands belonging to the Sri Lankan Republic make up the final 342 km2 of the nation. Sri Lanka’s largest offshore island is Mannar Island. Historically, this island used to link to the Indian mainland via a natural causeway known as ‘Adam’s Bridge’. This landmass is now submerged, with the sea completely separating Sri Lanka from India.
