EXPLORE

Cancun

Cancun is one of Mexico’s most recognised and established coastal destinations, and ahead of positioning the area within our portfolio, our Caribbean & Mexico team travelled to gain first-hand insight into its evolving appeal.

Often associated with its lively reputation, Cancun offers far more than its well-known nightlife. Set along the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, the destination combines white sand beaches and clear Caribbean waters with a strong collection of high-end, contemporary resorts. Our team visited key properties including ATELIER Playa Mujeres, Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun and Haven Riviera Cancun, each of which offers a refined, tranquil environment that contrasts with the destination’s more energetic side.

Cancun is divided into two distinct areas: the Hotel Zone, a well-developed strip of resorts, beaches and beach clubs, and Downtown (El Centro), which provides a more local perspective with markets and authentic dining. This duality allows the destination to cater to a broad range of client preferences, from those seeking a social atmosphere to those prioritising relaxation.

The destination also benefits from its proximity to Isla Mujeres, a short boat journey away, offering calmer waters and a more laid-back island experience, ideal for day trips or as part of a wider itinerary.

While Cancun may not suit every client profile, it presents a strong option as part of a twin-centre itinerary. Clients can experience the livelier side of the region, including renowned venues such as Coco Bongo and a range of beach clubs, before transitioning to the more relaxed Riviera Maya coastline. Pairing a stay at ATELIER Playa Mujeres with properties such as Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection allows for a seamless balance between energy and wellness-led luxury.

Geography

Cancun is located on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, along a narrow strip of coastline bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon. Its geography is defined by a distinctive contrast between its offshore islands, lagoon system, and mainland jungle, creating a varied coastal environment within a relatively compact area. The coastline around Cancun forms part of the wider Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, the second-largest coral reef in the world, which runs parallel to the Yucatán Peninsula. This offshore reef helps protect the shoreline from strong ocean swells, resulting in clear, shallow turquoise waters that are particularly well suited to swimming, snorkelling, and marine excursions. Inland, Cancun transitions into mangrove ecosystems and low-lying tropical terrain, which form an important natural buffer between developed areas and the surrounding environment. Just offshore lies Isla Mujeres, a small island known for its calmer waters and more relaxed coastal landscape, shaped by the same reef system and lagoon-influenced currents. This proximity adds further variety to Cancun’s coastal geography, offering clients an easy escape to quieter beaches within a short boat journey. While more developed than much of the surrounding coastline, Cancun still sits within a broader ecological corridor that includes mangroves, marine habitats, and protected natural areas. This blend of reef-protected waters, lagoon systems, and tropical lowlands gives the destination its distinctive character within the wider Caribbean coastline.

History

Cancun was inhabited by the maya civilisation, same as the Riviera Maya, before becoming a resort destination, but not as much evidence of these origins remains as it does further down the coast. Up until the mid-20th century, Cancun was actually a remote island with very little infrastructure and far more jungle! Today’s Cancun began in the late 1960s - early 1970s when the Mexican government decided to create a new tourism hub from scratch. Between the 1980s - 2000s Cancun boomed and quickly became one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations and known globally for all-inclusive resorts and nightlife. Now with millions of visitors annually and an entire hotel "zone”, resorts have begun to diversify, and in recent years, there’s been a shift to more luxury and wellness resorts with a greater focus on sustainability and experiences beyond nightlife. For historical sites we recommend adding Tulum, a fortified city overlooking the Caribbean; Cobá, home to one of the tallest pyramids in the region; or Chichén Itzá, located further inland to your clients itineraries. About a 2-hour drive from Cancun, Chichén Itzá is very accessible and, as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a landmark that clients should not miss.
