Mashuni is a popular breakfast dish in the Maldives. There isn’t a household or resort that doesn’t serve this simple dish. It’s also one of our Hummingbird Favourites and Mie our Sales and Marketing Manager often makes it for the team.
It is a great dish for the summer. It’s refreshing, tangy and spicy all at the same time. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Mie’s shared her recipe with you below. Let us know if you make it and tag us in your posts
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
1 small red onion , thinly sliced
2 green chilis, chopped. You can add more to taste
1 lime, juiced
1 can of tuna, drained
½ cup of grated coconut. If you can’t find fresh coconut you can use desiccated coconut, just remember to rehydrate it with some hot water before use .
Salt, a pinch to taste.
Method
Finely slice the onions and chop the chillis .
Add the onions and chilis into a bowl and squeeze in the lime and mix it well. The secret is to give it a good squeeze, it helps the lime take some of the sharpness away from the onions.
Add a pinch of salt to taste
Drain the can of tuna and add it to the bowl and mix it.
Finally add the grated coconut / desiccated coconut and give it a mix
Serve it with some flat bread (roti, chapati or paratha) and a sweet black tea,
For variations you can add ½ a cup of steamed butternut squash or roasted aubergine into the mix.
