Tucked away on the eastern side of Sri Lanka, Rajagala is a hidden gem for history lovers and adventure seekers alike. Spanning over 100 acres, this ancient monastery boasts extensive ruins, often compared to Polonnaruwa—only on a smaller, less crowded scale.

Dating back to the 1st century BC, Rajagala was significantly expanded by Prince Saddhatissa, who added temples, monasteries, and other structures to enhance its grandeur. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving Buddhist sanctuary, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Reaching the ruins requires an easy-to-moderate hike up the mountain, but for those who prefer a more relaxed journey, special permission allows vehicle access to the top. If you’re staying in the nearby Gal Oya area for wildlife safaris, a visit to Rajagala provides a striking cultural contrast, immersing you in Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.

At the summit, you'll find ancient temples, intricately carved Lord Buddha statues, the tombs of revered Buddhist monks, and numerous meditation caves. One of the most intriguing aspects of Rajagala’s history is its unfinished structures. The monastery was once set to be a crown jewel of the region, but when civil war erupted, the reigning king had to abandon its construction to focus on the conflict. Evidence of this abrupt halt can still be seen today, such as a half-carved Buddha statue frozen in time.

For those who prefer to explore beyond the usual tourist trails, Rajagala offers a serene and immersive experience. Even now, archaeologists continue to unearth new ruins, shedding light on this 2,000-year-old site.
