Sugar Beach & Cap Maison

Following on from our previous Journal from St. Lucia, the team got to stay at Sugar Beach and Cap Maison; properties that define timeless luxury and elegance. We are excited to share with you their thoughts and how they enjoyed the properties.

Travelling in the South of St. Lucia, there’s no doubt you’ll see the Pitons everywhere you go. But there’s nothing quite like it when you’re standing on the beach, with the two Pitons towering over you on either side. Here at Sugar Beach the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site setting creates a picturesque and breathtaking backdrop wherever you are.

As you drive down towards the coast you will catch a glimpse of the ocean and the property nestled around the lush grounds. After being welcomed with a refreshing rum punch we were whisked away for a tour around the property. We started at the rainforest spa where the unique treehouses are built on stilts and perched high above the ground. A stream quietly runs through the forest creating a true location to rejuvenate, relax, and reset. From here, guests can go for hikes to the waterfalls and nearby local markets. Working our way down, we saw the beautifully appointed signature restaurant Saltwood and Cane Bar and admired many of the owner’s art collection along the way! A quick stop at the Grab & Go cafe where we cooled off with homemade ice-cream, we continued towards the beach. The grounds here are beautifully looked after and offer a harmonious blend of tropical splendour and modern elegance. In the centre of the garden sits the Sugar Mill ruins, a fascinating historical feature that offers a glimpse into the island's colonial past and the integral role that sugarcane cultivation played in shaping its history. Stopping at Bonte, we enjoyed a beachfront lunch with our toes in the sand looking out onto luxury yachts anchored at a distance away. Guests around the island come here for the amazing reef that is accessible from the beach; and of course we jumped right into the ocean at our first opportunity as soon as we were done at lunch. After spending a few hours at this secluded beach, our butler picked us up and off we went to our own villas. First step into our villas we were blown away. Elegant designs equipped with luxury amenities and each with a private plunge pool, a true home-away-from-home feeling explains why guests come back year after year.

From the south, we drove through the windy mountainous roads up north and headed towards Cap Maison. Upon arrival we were welcomed at ‘The Cliff at Cap’ where we fell completely in awe of the stunning views. A natter and a couple of signature rum cocktails later, we walked through the property and finally arrived at our private 3 Bedroom Oceanview Suite with Pool. The design and decor is an elegant fusion of Caribbean and European influences, and the suite opens up onto a private pool and the beautifully appointed lawn. Through the Hibiscus trees, you can see a small beach in the distance tucked in between the rugged shoreline. We couldn’t resist and quickly headed down to ‘The Naked Fisherman’ (note: not an actual person and nobody was naked!) for a dip in the ocean and a glass of Rose to cool off! This is a popular hangout spot for many guests especially in the afternoon accompanied by the sound of soft Reggae music. A light snack menu here is available to ensure we were well fuelled and hydrated. Here I would recommend the ceviche with local reef fish which was absolutely sensational!

As the sun started to set, we returned back to our suite and admired the beautiful sky and got ourselves ready for dinner. An evening at’ The Cliff at Cap’ was very special as we got to enjoy a 3 course fine dining experience inspired by Caribbean and French flavours. For guests staying at Cap Maison, we would strongly suggest booking the ‘Rock Maison & Champagne Zip Line’ experience - perhaps one of the most iconic dining experiences in St. Lucia.
