Ellie's Guide to Luxury Hotels in Cancun & the Riviera Maya

After my recent visit to Mexico earlier this year, I completely understand why it’s such a

sought-after destination. What surprised me most was the range of luxury properties on offer.

From intimate jungle hideaways to expansive, experience-led resorts, Cancun and the Riviera

Maya really do cater to every type of client - if you know where to look!

After visiting nearly 30 properties in just one week (a busy one!), here are some of my personal

highlights and who I’d recommend them for.

For Couples & Honeymoons

If I had to pick standouts for romance, these would be top of my list.

Viceroy Riviera Maya was a real favourite of mine. It’s incredibly private and peaceful, with standalone villas hidden in the jungle, each with its own private pool. I loved how relaxed and authentic it felt - perfect for honeymooners or couples who want to properly switch off.

I also absolutely loved Hotel Esencia. It has such a chic, artistic feel - almost like staying in a beautifully curated gallery. There’s something really special about the way guests are encouraged to explore the grounds without signage; it makes the whole experience feel much more personal and immersive.

And for something completely different, Palafitos at El Dorado are truly breathtaking. The only overwater bungalows in this part of Mexico, they give you that Maldives-style experience with a sophisticated blend of Mexican culture.

For Wellness & Slower Travel

If your clients are looking to reset and recharge, Mexico does this beautifully.

Palmaïa – The House of AïA really stood out to me. It’s one of the only properties in the area with natural cenotes on-site that guests can swim in, which felt incredibly special. The whole hotel is centred around wellbeing, whether that’s a simple yoga class or a full wellness retreat.

I was also really impressed by Etéreo, Auberge Collection. It has a very calm, considered design and you can really feel the connection to Mayan culture throughout the property. It’s ideal for clients who want something memorable and meaningful.

Chablé Maroma is another beautiful option - set right on one of the most stunning beaches I saw during the trip. The spa is incredible, and I had one of my favourite lunches of the week there.

For Families

There are some fantastic options here that manage to feel both luxurious and family-friendly.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya does this exceptionally well. The suites are huge, the service is outstanding, and there are so many thoughtful touches. I still can’t get over the kids’ spa, it’s the sweetest thing!

Hotel Xcaret México is perfect for families wanting something more experience-led. Their “All-Fun Inclusive” concept includes parks, activities and excursions, which adds so much value and keeps everything seamless.

I also really liked Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya. The setting is stunning, and it works well for mixed groups with both family-friendly areas and adults-only spaces.

For Boutique & Low-Key Luxury

Sometimes clients just want something a bit more understated and relaxed.

The Fives Oceanfront Puerto Morelos is a great option for this. It’s smaller, more intimate, and has a lovely boutique feel with beautiful ocean views.

I also enjoyed The Beachfront by The Fives, which has a really charming, village-style layout. It felt quite different to the larger resorts, and we even spotted monkeys and turtles while walking around, which was such a lovely experience.

For Ultra-Luxury

If your clients are looking for something truly exceptional, these properties really stood out.

Rosewood Mayakoba is absolutely stunning, set amongst mangroves with pathways leading down to a beautiful beach club. The spa is a real highlight, so peaceful and beautifully designed.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba also impressed me from the moment we arrived. The villas are incredibly private, and the overwater spa treatment rooms create such a tranquil setting.

And then there’s Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, just wow. Every detail has been thought through so carefully, and the level of service is exactly what you’d expect from Belmond. It’s also set on one of the best beaches in the Riviera Maya.

For Elevated All-Inclusive

For clients who want a high-quality all-inclusive experience with a modern feel, you can't go wrong with these two.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres was one of my favourite stays of the trip. The rooftop infinity pool and bar are incredible, and the food was some of the best I had all week (the steak at Los Abrazos is a must).

Haven Riviera Cancun is also a great option, especially given how close it is to the airport. I loved the layout of the resort, particularly the large circular pool overlooking the ocean. I’d definitely recommend upgrading to the Serenity rooms for the added benefits.

Something for Everyone

This trip really changed my perspective on Mexico.

It’s not just one type of holiday - it’s a destination that can be tailored in so many different ways,
depending on the client. Whether they’re looking for romance, wellness, family time or something
ultra-luxurious,
there’s genuinely something here for everyone.

And having experienced it first-hand, I’m so excited to start matching clients with the
right properties.
