Beyond the Beach: Three Maldives Resorts for Clients Seeking More Than Relaxation
When Hummingbird CEO Alex and Business Development Manager James recently travelled through the Maldives, they expected to experience exceptional resorts, stunning scenery and world-class hospitality. What surprised them most, however, was just how much there was to do.
The Maldives is often seen as a destination for relaxation rightly so. But between surfing, diving, snorkelling, spa treatments, island exploration and memorable dining experiences, their days were full from start to finish. It was a reminder that the Maldives can be rewarding for active, experience-led travellers as it is for those seeking complete relaxation.

Best suited for: Clients seeking privacy, wellness and genuine escapism.
COMO Maalifushi: A True Escape
The first thing Alex and James noticed at COMO Maalifushi was It's calmness. Located in the remote Thaa Atoll, the resort feels removed from the outside world, making it an ideal option for clients looking to properly switch off.
One of the highlights was exploring the neighbouring island, which COMO owns exclusively for guests. Accessible by kayak, paddleboard or on foot at low tide, it offers a sense of freedom and discovery. During one visit, James was even greeted by one of the island's surprisingly friendly resident rabbits.
Between the peaceful atmosphere, accessible house reef and COMO's well-known focus on wellness, it's easy to see why so many guests return year after year.
Six Senses Laamu: Life Above and Below the Water
If there was one resort that challenged the idea of the Maldives as a purely fly-and-flop destination, it was Six Senses Laamu.
As the only resort in Laamu Atoll, it offers an incredible sense of seclusion, but it was the ocean that truly stole the show. From surfing the famous Yin Yangs break to diving vibrant reefs and spotting turtles from the overwater villas, almost every memorable moment centred around the water.
One dive in particular stood out, revealing an exceptionally healthy reef and an enormous sea anemone inhabited by an astonishing 62 clownfish.
Back on land, the resort's marine conservation work, relaxed barefoot luxury and outstanding dining experiences, including a private Teppanyaki dinner with sake pairing, highlighted why Six Senses Laamu remains one of the Maldives' most distinctive properties.
Best suited for: Ocean lovers, surfers, divers and clients seeking relaxed luxury with a strong sense of place.
Best suited for: Design-conscious travellers, food lovers and clients looking for a contemporary luxury experience.
Patina Maldives: A Different Side of the Maldives
Patina felt entirely different to the previous two resorts, offering a more contemporary and social side of the Maldives.
Located in North Malé Atoll and just a short speedboat transfer from the airport, it's an easy property to incorporate into wider itineraries or recommend to clients short on time. The resort's design immediately stands out, but it was the food that left the biggest impression on Alex and James, with every meal proving a highlight in its own right.
One of the most memorable moments of the stay came at the James Turrell light installation, an immersive experience unlike anything else they encountered during the trip. As the colours slowly shifted around the space, it became difficult to tell where the architecture ended and the sky began, creating a surprisingly calming and almost otherworldly experience.
The island also delivered some unexpected wildlife encounters. While snorkelling along the drop-off, they spotted blacktip reef sharks, watched an octopus change colour before their eyes and swam amongst huge schools of fish, a reminder that there's plenty to discover beyond the resort's striking architecture.
OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi: Underwater Restaurants & Incredible Value
OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi is a fantastic example of the value that can be found in the Maldives. While the destination is often perceived as being exclusively ultra-luxury, this welcoming 4-star resort proves that a Maldivian escape can be far more accessible than many realise.
The resort offers generous all-inclusive inclusions, making it an excellent option for guests who want to arrive, relax and enjoy their holiday without thinking about additional costs.
One of the highlights for James and Alex was touring the overwater villas, which are available on an all-inclusive basis at a very competitive rate. For many travellers, it's a rare opportunity to experience one of the Maldives' most iconic accommodation styles without the premium price tag.
"It also has the largest underwater restaurant in the Maldives, which is such a unique experience and a real bucket-list moment for many clients. It's a great reminder that there really is a resort in the Maldives to suit every budget." – James
Best suited for: Budget-conscious travellers, families and couples looking for an accessible introduction to the Maldives with plenty of activities and great value.
