Maldives by Atoll: Where to Send Your Clients & Why

The Maldives can look deceptively simple: thousands of islands, turquoise lagoons and a resort on its own private island. But for agents, knowing which atoll suits which client can make all the difference.

From easy-access islands close to Malé to remote northern escapes, each atoll offers something different. Here’s our insider take on key atolls, paired with Hummingbird properties that bring each experience to life.

If your client doesn't want to spend half their first day travelling, North Malé is a great place to start. Most resorts are just a short speedboat ride from Malé, while the atoll itself is home to some of the Maldives' original resort islands, with established vegetation, natural beaches and excellent reefs. It’s also one of the best areas for surfing, particularly between May and October, making it a useful option for clients who want to combine a classic island escape with time in the water.

Makunudu is a small, traditional Maldivian island with a sense of heritage and community. The longstanding team is a real part of the experience, creating a warm, personal atmosphere, while the house reef sits close to shore for easy access to the island's marine life. Its intimate setting and straightforward island living make it particularly well suited to couples, honeymooners and divers.

Baa is one of those atolls we'd immediately think of when a client tells us they want their Maldives holiday to be about more than the villa. Its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status reflects the richness of the surrounding waters, while Hanifaru Bay is the real star during manta season. Watching dozens of manta rays gather in the bay is the sort of experience that can become the highlight of an entire trip.

Amilla is one of the more versatile options in Baa. The resort is contemporary and spacious, with particularly strong accommodation options for families and larger groups, including multi-bedroom beach villas and residences. There's also plenty to do away from the beach, from tennis and cycling to wellness and a wide choice of restaurants, making it a good fit for clients who want variety rather than a purely fly-and-flop stay. For the right dates, being close to Hanifaru Bay is a major selling point, with the best manta activity typically seen during the September-December period.

Insider tip: Amilla is a particularly strong option for families, multi-generational groups and longer stays where guests will appreciate having plenty of space and choice.

Further north, Raa is a great option for clients looking for a quieter side of the Maldives. The atoll is known for its rich underwater ecosystem, with excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving, while its less developed feel means there’s no pressure to fill the itinerary. It’s the kind of place where the reef, the island and a slower pace do most of the work.

Alila Kothaifaru is a particularly good fit for couples who like their luxury understated. The design is modern and minimalist, but the villas sit within the island's natural vegetation rather than overpowering it. Wellness is a real highlight, especially the spa tucked into the jungle, while the Japanese restaurant and intimate yakitori bar add something a little different to the dining line-up. The overall feel is calm, contemporary and unhurried, making it a lovely choice for clients looking to combine plenty of time to relax with a strong focus on wellness and the natural surroundings.

Insider tip: The spa is one of the real highlights here, tucked away amongst the island's natural vegetation. For clients who enjoy wellness, we'd recommend building some downtime around a treatment rather than adding it in as an afterthought.

Right at the northern tip of the Maldives, Haa Alifu feels has a more relaxed feel than the busier resort areas around Malé. The atoll is made up of larger, more naturally lush islands, with broad beaches, open lagoons and a quieter pace that comes from simply being so far north. It's a great choice for clients who have already experienced the more familiar side of the Maldives and want to see somewhere that feels a little less discovered.

Hideaway is particularly well suited to Haa Alifu's more remote character. It's a large, naturally beautiful island, with expansive beaches, generous lagoons and villas spaced among lush vegetation to create a strong sense of privacy. The house reef sits close to shore, while the resort has enough facilities; from diving and watersports to tennis, pickleball, a kids' club and a spa, to keep guests occupied without the island feeling overly busy. Dedicated butler service and bicycles for each villa are useful touches, particularly given the size of the island.

Our insider tip: Don't let the size put you off for honeymooners. The villas are well spaced and feel private, while the facilities and accommodation choices also make Hideaway a strong option for families who want plenty to do without staying somewhere that feels overly commercial.

If getting in the water is high on your client's wishlist, South Ari is one to have at the top of your list. The atoll is particularly renowned for whale shark encounters, alongside excellent diving and snorkelling, making it one of the strongest choices for clients who want their Maldives holiday to revolve around marine life. The fact that whale sharks can be encountered here year-round also makes South Ari particularly useful when wildlife is a priority.

Conrad is a particularly good fit for South Ari because it gives clients plenty to do both in and out of the water. The resort spans two islands, with the larger Rangali-Finolhu offering a more family-friendly atmosphere, while the smaller Rangali Island is adults-only and noticeably quieter. There's an impressive choice of dining, two spas and a beautiful lagoon, but the experiences are what really set it apart from dining beneath the water at Ithaa to heading out in search of whale sharks. The house reef also means guests can get into the water straight from the island, without needing to book an excursion every time they want to snorkel.

Our insider tip: For couples, we’d look closely at the adults-only Rangali Island. It’s noticeably quieter and particularly beautiful, with lush planting and the lagoon creating calm, clear waters around the island.
